Powers of Border Security Force increased in Punjab, Assam and West Bengal
BSF powers increased in 3 border states that are Punjab, Assam and West Bengal.
The area of jurisdiction of BSF is now a 50 km running belt from the border. Earlier it was 15 km.
BSF has the powers of search, seizure and arrests under acts like the passport act, NDPS act, customs act, and CrPC.
It will empower BSF to carry out operations against narcotics, arms trafficking and illegal infiltration.
The current area of jurisdiction under BSF in various states-
Gujrat- 50 km (earlier 80 km)
Raj 50 km
Punjab- 50 km (earlier 15km)
West Bengal-50 km (earlier 15km)
Assam 50 km (earlier 15km)
Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura and J&K – whole state

BSF was established on 1 Dec 1965.
BSF is the only CAPF that has its own full-fledged water wing, air wing, and artillery regiments

3 BN of BSF located in Kolkata, Guwahati, Patna are designated as NDRF.
As a part of modernisation, BSF has also started installing BOLD-QIT (smart fence) along the Bangladesh border under the project CIBMS (comprehensive integrated border management system)
